On the Scene Reports
The 2007 St. Andrew El Salvador Mission
Day 3: Oct. 21st, 2007

Sunday was our leisure day for the trip and the theme for trip was "las tres aguas" (the three waters) and the weather cooperated by providing us with rain all day long!

We climbed around and down to this base of this volumous thermal waterfall. Our expedition began with a short hike down to the river where we had to jump rock to rock over steaming waters to get across.

The trail to the base of the waterfall consisted of steep and muddy inclines traversing both jungle and corn fields to a treacherous descent at the edge of the river below

After a short and extremely wet photo op at the bottom of the falls we retraced our path through the jungle and corn field and across the now risen river back to the bus.

We stopped in a beautiful mountain village called Apaneca to visit the shop of some local artisans, one of which we got to watch weave fabric.

Our incredible tour guide Payin took us to a wonderful spot for lunch called "La Cocina de mi Abuela" (My Grandmother's Kitchen).

Payin then took us to this beautiful coffee plantation which also had one of the most incredible gardens any of us have ever seen. Before we went to "aqua" number three we sat down and had some wonderful coffee and some Salvadoran quesadilla which is a sweet bread instead of the Mexican quesadilla we are used to.

"Agua" number three was a spectacular pair of waterfalls. Payin, our tour guide, is on the left and Guillermo Gonzalez is on the right.

The falls of the left is fed from a natural spring so the water is incredibly clear. The water on the right is fed from a creek up the hill so the water in more cloudy. Seeing the two side by side is very beautiful.
In the region of El Salvador where we were coffee plants are everywhere and in the lower elevation coffee beans are nearing harvest and in the higher elevations (pictured here) the plants will be harvest in about a month.
