La Luz

For over a decade La Luz has been the light for Sonoma Valley in its efforts to fully include all ethnic and cultural groups in the rich life of our community. The staff and volunteers work hard to be sure that basic needs of food, clothing, shelter, a decent job and a meaningful education are available to all. They have been instrumental in providing information and referral for non-English speakers new to our Valley. They have worked to develop independence and full participation of the Spanish speaking communities in Valley life through informational forums, cultural exchanges and skill development. They have worked to increase intercultural appreciation and to break down cultural barriers.

They believe that the variety and cooperation of cultures in our community is a sign of our strength. The La Luz Bilingual Center was founded by Ligia Booker in 1985. In 1997 it changed its name to La Luz, because it branched out to activities other than just bilingual programs.

La Luz receives no state or federal support. They are supported by the members of the community, individual donations, the United Way, the Vintners and Growers Association's annual Wine Harvest Auction, and by grant support for specific programs. La Luz is supported by St. Andrew through an annual
Holiday Concert Performance of the St. Andrew Singers, Festival Bells, Young Vibrations and the Drama Team.

2006 and 2007 Christmas Concert for La Luz:
In both 2006 and 2007, the Worship Arts department at St. Andrew presented the one-act children’s Christmas opera “Amahl and the Night Visitors.”  With three performances each year, the church was able to surpass our previous gifts to La Luz.

2008 Christmas Concert for La Luz
The 2008 Christmas Concert for La Luz will be presented on Sunday evening, December 21st.  The St. Andrew Singers will present Jazz Gloria by Rob Landes.  Scored for piano, bass, drums and choir, this piece promises to bring a lot of joy to the Christmas season.  The Festival Bells will also perform, as will a guest jazz ensemble led by Jon Popenoe.  A free-will offering will be taken.
