What Goes Where?

If you’re confused about where to dispose of your waste (Recycle? Compost? Landfill?) you are not alone!

But the Green Team is here to help.

Recycle

Are you a wish-cycler (i.e., someone who puts everything in the blue recycle bin)?  Here’s what you can and cannot recycle.

Acceptable Recycling:

Do NOT put these in the Recycle Bin

Anything made from Styrofoam

Broken glass, ceramics, dinnerware

Shredded paper or small pieces of paper

Metal wire such as coat hangers

All textiles

Anything made from rubber

Anything made from cork

Disposable diapers

***DO NOT PUT PLASTIC BAGS FILLED WITH RECYCLABLES IN THE RECYCLE BIN!***

(Recology will throw the whole bag with its contents in the landfill)

Compost

Did you know that it is now a California law (SB 1383) that all households and business MUST put food scraps in the green Recology Bin?  Here’s what you can and cannot compost.

Acceptable Compost:

Do NOT put these in the Compost Bin

Bags or cups that are labeled “compostable”

Corks

Bamboo or anything made from bamboo

Palms or cactus

Disposable diapers

Cat litter or animal waste

Anything with a plastic liner

Landfill

Our landfills are overwhelmed.  In 2018, 39,000,000 tons of waste was put in California landfills.  Of that, about 1/3 were compostable items and 20% were recyclable items. Let’s keep these out of our landfills.
