Director of Children and Youth Education

 

The Director of Children and Youth Education is responsible for managing all aspects of our children’s and youth programs. This role fosters a safe, meaningful environment that nurtures faith development in collaboration with our dedicated staff and congregation.

 

This position includes the following responsibilities:

 

CHILDREN’S MINISTRY

 

Sunday School

Develop and oversee infant, preschool, and K-5 Sunday School classes.

Recruit, train, and manage volunteer teachers and their schedules.

Supervise two paid part-time employees in the nursery and preschool.

Select and implement curricula that align with St. Andrew’s values.

Coordinate with the Church Administrator to ensure background checks are completed for all volunteers.

Communicate regularly with parents regarding lesson plans and activities.

Provide a welcoming and inclusive atmosphere for all families, especially newcomers.

Track attendance for Sunday morning programs.

Teach Sunday School regularly.

 

Vacation Bible School (VBS)

Plan, organize, and oversee all aspects of VBS.

Coordinate Vacation Bible School registration for children and volunteers and work the check-in/check-out table during the event.

Select and acquire appropriate curriculum, props, and supplies.

Recruit and train volunteers, encouraging St. Andrew youth to take on leadership roles.

Promote VBS within the church and throughout the Sonoma Valley.

Engage with participating families as part of church outreach efforts.

 

Christmas Pageants

Coordinate and direct the annual Christmas pageants.

Organize two performances: one on the third Sunday of Advent and one on Christmas Eve, which is integrated into a children’s worship service.

Recruit, organize, and oversee volunteer rehearsals and presentations.

Manage costumes and coordinate the setup and breakdown of sets.

 

Children’s Worship and Sermons

Plan and lead children's sermons during the Discovery Time in worship on a regular basis.

 

YOUTH MINISTRY

 

Middle and High School Groups

Lead regular youth group sessions, with frequency to be determined.

Blend biblical learning with relevant discussions and service activities.

Foster a safe and trusting space where youth feel comfortable expressing doubts and asking tough questions.

Stay informed on current issues and trends affecting students.

Ensure strong integration between youth and children’s ministries.

Collaborate with the Pastor to involve youth in occasional worship services.

Seek professional development opportunities in youth ministry leadership.

Maintain contact with high school graduates during their first year of college.

 

Caravan (Annual Mission Trip)

Research and select the trip site, arrange travel and lodging, manage the budget, and plan logistics.

Organize youth fundraisers and special events to support Caravan.

Accompany and supervise youth throughout the trip.

Recruit, train, and support adult chaperones.

Prepare and coordinate the Caravan Sunday Service upon return.

 

Easter Sunrise Service

Plan and lead the Easter Sunrise Service in collaboration with youth.

Oversee all aspects, including fire pit setup, sound system setup and breakdown, and service coordination.

 

FAMILY MINISTRY

Work with volunteers to host monthly Family Hangouts for children and youth families.

 

ADMINISTRATIVE RESPONSIBILITIES

Attend weekly staff meetings.

Manage both youth and children’s ministry budgets.

Update and maintain volunteer schedules using ChurchTeams software.

Plan and host the annual parents' meeting, typically held in August.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

Demonstrated ability to engage and educate children and youth.

Organized and creative, with a vision for a youth program that deepens faith.

Comfortable discussing scripture with both church-connected and non-church-affiliated youth.

Strong skills in budget management, verbal and written communication.

Ability to build meaningful relationships with students, adult leaders, and families.

Collaborative, team-oriented, personable, and committed to personal spiritual growth.

Familiarity with the Bible, the Reformed tradition, and a relationship with Jesus Christ.

 

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

Associate degree or higher preferred, or equivalent experience.

Experience working with children and/or youth (volunteer experience acceptable).

Preferred but not required: 1+ years of experience in children’s and/or youth ministry.

Fluency in English required; Spanish language skills a plus.

 

REQUIREMENTS

Fingerprint clearance.

Red Cross First Aid/CPR certification (within 30 days of hire).

Technical proficiency, including familiarity with ChurchTeams software and VBS platforms.

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, use hands for various tasks, and communicate effectively. The role frequently requires standing and walking. Occasionally, the employee may need to lift or move objects up to 10 pounds, with occasional lifting of up to 30 pounds during events such as VBS and Christmas pageants.

 

Job Type: Part-time

 

Pay: $25,000.00 - $34,000.00 per year

 

Expected hours: 5 – 15 per week
